Village on River

What will you use a raffia for? I know you will will say to weave a beautiful basket, a comfortable chair or a hand fan.

But do you know there is a village in Ghana where the entire community is on water and built with raffia, stilts and platforms? Yes I call it the WOVEN VILLAGE. This village is popularly known as the ever beautiful NZULEZU.

The legend of this village is that the protecting spirit of the village, a snail, traveled to lead people to this place to establish a home.

Today the village subsists on fishing, farming on nearby land, and tourism. There is also guest house at the village and it is entirely made up of stilts and platforms. The community has a basic school up to primary six , after their primary school education, the children are given canoes to go to the nearby villages to continue their basic education. There is also a chapel in this miraculous community.

The village was nominated as a UNESCO world heritage site in the year 2000 and it is a major tourist attraction area.
